The Maunsell Fort
The Maunsell Fort are armed towers built in the Thames Estuary during the Second World War to help defend the United Kingdom. They were operated as army and navy forts and named after their designer, Guy Maunsell. Their purpose was to provide anti-aircraft fire within the Thames Estuary area.
While travelling around the Alpes-Maritimes region of France on his bike, writer Max Leonard began noticing strange structures hidden in the landscape – sunken, windowless buildings that seemed to appear out of nowhere. With a new fascination of bunkers, Max here goes in search of the Maunsell Fort off in the Thames Estuary.
